Trump Aims to Extend Musk's Government Role

President Trump has publicly stated his desire to retain Elon Musk as a special government employee for as long as possible. This comes despite Musk's previously announced plans to step down from his position at the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) in late May 2025.

Balancing Business and Government Service

While acknowledging Musk's significant business responsibilities at Tesla, President Trump emphasized the value of Musk's contributions to the government. Trump stated, "At some point he’s going to want to go back to his company. He has a big company to run." This suggests a recognition of the potential conflict between Musk's business and government roles.

DOGE's Continued Operations

The president also confirmed that his cabinet secretaries will continue the work of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). Established in January following a proposal from Musk, DOGE aims to reduce federal bureaucratic costs and save $1 trillion in tax spending. The agency recently reported savings of approximately $140 billion.

Addressing Dogecoin Speculation

Initial speculation linked DOGE to Dogecoin cryptocurrency due to Musk's endorsement of the cryptocurrency and the agency's name. However, Musk clarified that neither DOGE nor the US government plans to use Dogecoin, confirming the name was chosen based on public input.

Tesla's Challenges and Musk's Departure

Musk's impending departure coincides with challenges faced by Tesla, including protests, stock declines (a 36% drop in Q1 2025, according to Yahoo Finance), and acts of vandalism against its facilities. Furthermore, political controversies surrounding Musk and Tesla's association with right-wing politics have led to consumer boycotts and investor concerns.
