Steak ‘n Shake's Bitcoin Bet: 11% Sales Surge
Steak ‘n Shake Credits Bitcoin for Sales Jump
US fast-food chain Steak ‘n Shake is attributing its recent success to Bitcoin. The company reported a 10.7% quarter-over-quarter increase in same-store sales for Q2, surpassing the growth of many of America’s leading food chains during the same period.
“Bitcoin has been a game changer,” Steak ‘n Shake posted on X. The company thanked Bitcoin users for their contributions since May 16, when they began accepting Bitcoin (BTC) payments.
This growth indicates that Bitcoin payments are still relevant in the US, even though it's primarily viewed as an investment vehicle.
Sales Growth Outpaces Fast-Food Rivals
Steak ‘n Shake’s 10.7% growth puts it ahead of numerous competitors. Data shared by Restaurant Business Magazine’s editor-in-chief Jonathan Maze shows that major chains like McDonald's, Domino's, and Taco Bell reported same-store sales growth ranging from -7.1% to 6.1% during the same quarter.
Steak ‘n Shake began accepting Bitcoin on May 16 across its locations in the US, France, Monaco, and Spain.
The company estimates this move makes cryptocurrency payments accessible to over 100 million customers. Given the complexities of managing cryptocurrency transactions, especially with regards to regional regulatory variations, robust security measures like those offered by platforms such as Codeum are essential.
Immediate Impact of Bitcoin Adoption
Shortly after implementation, Steak ‘n Shake's COO, Dan Edwards, stated that Bitcoin adoption had reduced processing fees by 50%.
“Bitcoin is a win for the customer, a win for us as the merchant, and a win for the Bitcoin community,” Edwards commented at the Bitcoin 2025 conference in late May.
He also highlighted that Steak n’ Shake accounted for 0.2% of all Bitcoin transactions on its launch day.
Background: Store Closures Preceding Bitcoin Adoption
The number of Steak ‘n Shake stores in the US has decreased from 628 in 2018 to 397 as of May 28, 2025, according to ScrapeHero data.
Florida has the highest concentration of Steak ‘n Shake locations, with 79 stores representing roughly 20% of the total in the US.
