Metaplanet's Aggressive Bitcoin Accumulation Strategy

Japanese investment firm Metaplanet continues its ambitious Bitcoin accumulation strategy, raising a significant amount of capital through various funding rounds. Following a $50 million raise, Metaplanet issued $21 million in zero-interest bonds to Evo Fund, a Cayman Islands-based investment firm. This brings Metaplanet's total capital raised in 2025 to $135.2 million.

Details of the Bond Issuance

The recently issued bonds, part of the 17th series, carry a face value of $525,000 each and mature on November 28, 2025. The zero-interest nature allows Metaplanet to borrow without incurring additional repayment costs. Evo Fund has the right to early redemption with five business days' notice.

Metaplanet may also trigger redemptions based on future fundraising rounds involving Evo Fund. Importantly, these bonds lack collateral or a bond administrator, in accordance with Japanese corporate law. Payment handling is designated to Metaplanet's Tokyo office.

Metaplanet's Bitcoin Holdings and Strategy

Metaplanet aims to hold 10,000 BTC by the end of 2025. Currently, they hold approximately 7,800 BTC, placing them among the top corporate Bitcoin holders. Their average purchase price sits around $91,340 per Bitcoin, with current holdings valued at approximately $840 million.

Their Bitcoin acquisition strategy involves multiple funding methods, including earlier bond issuances totaling $25.9 million (February), $13.3 million (March), and $25 million (May).

Expansion and Future Plans

Metaplanet announced the establishment of a US subsidiary, Metaplanet Treasury, based in Florida, with plans to raise up to $250 million. This move signals their intent to tap into US capital markets and further accelerate their Bitcoin acquisition.

The company's advisory board includes notable figures such as Eric Trump. Metaplanet’s aggressive strategy aligns with a broader trend, evidenced by GameStop’s recent 4,710 BTC purchase.
