Metaplanet's Impressive Bitcoin Acquisition

Metaplanet, often referred to as "Japan's MicroStrategy," has achieved its ambitious goal of accumulating 10,000 Bitcoin (BTC), six months ahead of its 2025 target. This significant milestone propels them past Coinbase Global (holding 9,267 BTC), securing their position as the 9th largest publicly traded Bitcoin holder.

Recent Acquisitions Fuel Growth

Metaplanet's latest purchase of 1,112 BTC for approximately $117.2 million, at an average price of $105,435 per BTC, solidified this achievement. CEO Simon Gerovich announced the milestone, highlighting a 266.1% year-to-date (YTD) BTC yield (as of 6/16/2025). This follows a previous purchase of 1,088 BTC on June 2nd.

The company's aggressive Bitcoin acquisition strategy is further underscored by the recent approval of $210 million in ordinary bonds at a 0% interest rate, exclusively earmarked for additional Bitcoin purchases. These bonds, part of their 18th series, mature on December 12, 2025.

Future Plans and Funding

Metaplanet’s ambitious vision extends beyond 10,000 BTC. Their revised goals include:

  • 30,000 BTC by 2025
  • 100,000 BTC by 2026
  • 210,000 BTC by 2027 (1% of the total Bitcoin supply)

To finance this expansion, Metaplanet plans a substantial capital raise involving 555 million shares, aiming to secure $5.4 billion (¥770 billion).

Strategic Implications and Risks

Metaplanet's strategy mirrors the growing institutional interest in Bitcoin as a reserve asset. However, this aggressive accumulation raises important questions about sustainability and potential risks. The use of leverage, as highlighted by Sygnum's concerns, can increase insolvency risks. The potential impact of this level of accumulation on Bitcoin's market stability and centralization also warrants consideration.

Codeum, a leading blockchain security and development platform, offers various services to mitigate the risks associated with such ambitious cryptocurrency strategies, including smart contract audits, KYC verification, custom smart contract and DApp development, tokenomics and security consultation, and partnerships with launchpads and crypto agencies.
