Marla Maples Supports Roger Ver in Tax Evasion Case
Marla Maples Joins Calls to Dismiss Charges Against Roger Ver
Marla Maples, former wife of US President Donald Trump, has publicly voiced her support for ending the prosecution of Roger Ver, a prominent early Bitcoin advocate often called "Bitcoin Jesus." In a March 16th X post, Maples shared a video advocating for Ver's case dismissal and tagged Trump, Elon Musk, and US Attorney General Pam Bondi.
The Department of Justice indicted Ver in April 2024 on charges of mail fraud, tax evasion, and filing false tax returns. The indictment alleges Ver concealed his Bitcoin (BTC) holdings when renouncing his US citizenship in 2014, resulting in $48 million in unpaid taxes.
High-Profile Support for Ver
Maples' support adds to a growing list of prominent figures calling for the dismissal of the charges against Ver. This includes Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin and Ross Ulbricht, the creator of the Silk Road darknet market (who received a pardon from Trump).
- Ver has appealed to Trump for a pardon, citing "lawfare."
- While Trump hasn't commented publicly, Elon Musk stated on X that Ver gave up his US citizenship and therefore wouldn't receive a pardon.
- Ver’s legal team is arguing that the charges are unconstitutional and the IRS's "exit tax" for renounced citizens is unclear when applied to cryptocurrency.
Ver was arrested in Spain and later granted bail while awaiting extradition to the US. His legal team filed a motion to dismiss the case in December 2024.
