Logan Paul Wins Round in Coffeezilla Defamation Case
Logan Paul's Defamation Lawsuit Against Coffeezilla Moves Forward
A Texas magistrate judge has recommended that Logan Paul's defamation lawsuit against YouTuber Coffeezilla (Stephen Findeisen) should proceed. The lawsuit stems from Coffeezilla's critical videos and social media posts regarding Paul's failed CryptoZoo NFT project.
Magistrate Judge Henry Bemporad stated that Coffeezilla's claims were presented more as facts than opinions, therefore failing to meet the criteria for dismissal. The judge's recommendation, filed in a San Antonio federal court on March 26, now goes to federal Judge Orlando Garcia for final approval.
Key Points from the Ruling:
- Defamatory Statements: The judge found that Coffeezilla's statements, including calling Paul a "serial scammer" and CryptoZoo a "scam," met the legal definition of defamation.
- Insufficient Disclaimers: The judge deemed Coffeezilla's disclaimers in his videos insufficient to negate the defamatory nature of his statements, noting their lack of prominence.
- Ongoing Legal Battle: Both parties have 14 days to object to the magistrate judge's recommendation. The outcome will significantly impact the legal landscape surrounding online criticism and accountability in the crypto industry.
Paul initially sued Findeisen in June 2023, alleging reputational damage from Coffeezilla’s content. Coffeezilla argued that his statements were opinions protected under free speech. However, the judge disagreed, finding that the statements were presented as factual claims rather than subjective opinions.
The CryptoZoo Controversy:
CryptoZoo was marketed as a blockchain game featuring NFTs representing animals that could be bred to earn tokens. However, the project never fully materialized, leading to significant investor disappointment and accusations of fraud.
Further Legal Actions:
This case is one of several legal battles surrounding CryptoZoo. A class-action lawsuit has been filed against Paul and others involved in the project, and Paul has also filed a countersuit against business partners.
