Indonesia Considers Bitcoin Reserve Amid Crypto Policy Shifts

Regulations

Indonesia Weighs Bitcoin as Reserve Asset

The Indonesian government is exploring the possibility of adding Bitcoin to its national reserves. This development comes even as the country implements stricter regulations on cryptocurrency trading and mining.

Bitcoin Indonesia recently met with government officials to discuss the potential economic benefits of such a strategy. The organization highlighted Bitcoin mining and educational initiatives as key areas of focus.

"We were invited to the Vice President’s office to present how Bitcoin could benefit the country," Bitcoin Indonesia stated in an X post.

"We explored a bold idea: Using Bitcoin mining as a national reserve strategy."

The discussions also touched upon leveraging Indonesia's abundant hydroelectric and geothermal resources to power Bitcoin mining operations, which could stimulate job creation.

Key Areas of Focus

  • Bitcoin Mining: Utilizing Indonesia's renewable energy sources to power mining operations.
  • Education: Implementing Bitcoin education initiatives to drive adoption and understanding.
  • National Reserve: Exploring Bitcoin as a potential component of the country's national reserves.

Recent Policy Changes

Despite considering Bitcoin as a reserve asset, Indonesia has recently increased taxes on crypto trading and mining. Income tax on crypto sales via local exchanges has risen from 0.1% to 0.21%, while sales on foreign exchanges now face a 1% tax, up from 0.2%.

The value-added tax on crypto mining activities has also doubled from 1.1% to 2.2%.

Crypto Payment Ban and Enforcement

Indonesia maintains a ban on the use of cryptocurrency for payments, a policy that has been in place since 2017. While the ban remains, reports suggest that enforcement is not always strict, with some businesses in areas like Bali reportedly accepting Bitcoin.
