House Republicans Tackle Key Crypto Legislation

The US House of Representatives will hold a “Crypto Week” starting July 14th, focusing on three significant pieces of cryptocurrency legislation. This follows the recent passage of the Big Beautiful Bill, signaling a renewed Republican push for crypto regulation.

Key Bills Under Scrutiny

  • GENIUS Act: This Senate-passed bill aims to create a regulatory framework for stablecoins. While it has passed the Senate, a House vote is needed to finalize amendments. Concerns exist about its potential impact on DeFi and its perceived bias toward the fiat system.
  • CLARITY Act: A broader regulatory framework focusing on consumer protection and token classification (security vs. commodity). While supported by the crypto industry, concerns remain about the practicality and effectiveness of its proposed standards.
  • Anti-CBDC Surveillance State Act: This bill seeks to prevent the Federal Reserve from issuing a Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC). While a long-standing goal for some, it currently lacks the urgency of the other two bills.

House Speaker Mike Johnson stated, "House Republicans are taking decisive steps to deliver the full scope of President Trump’s digital assets and cryptocurrency agenda. During ‘Crypto Week,’ the House looks forward to the timely consideration of three landmark pieces of legislation: the CLARITY Act, the Anti-CBDC Surveillance State Act, and the Senate’s GENIUS Act."

What to Expect During Crypto Week

Crypto Week will be a critical period for the future of US crypto regulation. The outcome of these votes could significantly impact the adoption and development of digital assets within the United States. The GENIUS Act, in particular, is likely to dominate discussions given its progress in the Senate. The CLARITY Act, while facing some criticism, could offer much-needed clarity on token classification. The Anti-CBDC bill, though less immediately pressing, remains a key part of the Republican agenda.
