GPT-5 Launch: What's Coming in August?

Artificial Intelligence

Key Takeaways

  • GPT-5 is expected to launch in early August, with mini and nano versions accessible via ChatGPT and API.
  • The model combines GPT and o-series tech, including o3-style reasoning, to reduce friction and unify tasks.

According to The Verge, OpenAI is gearing up to launch GPT-5 in early August, marking a significant advancement in unifying language models with sophisticated reasoning systems.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman recently confirmed the upcoming release on X, celebrating a gold medal at the 2025 IMO competition achieved with a general-purpose reasoning model.

GPT-5 will integrate the o3 reasoning model into a single, cohesive system, streamlining its usage across ChatGPT and various developer tools. Altman has described it as “a system that integrates a lot of our technology.”

Before the arrival of GPT-5, OpenAI also plans to release an open-weight model—the first since GPT-2. This model, similar to o3 mini, will feature reasoning capabilities and be available via Azure, Hugging Face, and other cloud providers.

This announcement follows OpenAI's recent rollout of several new features for ChatGPT. In June, the company introduced agentic capabilities, allowing users to delegate tasks such as scheduling, creating slideshows, and executing code.

These agents consolidate earlier tools like Operator and Deep Research into a unified interface, further enhancing ChatGPT's functionality in anticipation of GPT-5's release.
