France Busts Crypto Kidnapping Ring

Cryptocurrency Security

French authorities have made significant arrests in connection with a series of cryptocurrency-related kidnappings in Paris. More than 12 individuals, including several minors, have been apprehended and charged with kidnapping, attempted kidnapping, and criminal conspiracy, according to Le Parisien.

Multiple Kidnapping Attempts Linked

Investigators believe a criminal organization is behind the attacks, utilizing social media for recruitment. Two prominent cases highlight the scale of the operation:

  • May 13th Attempted Kidnapping: Three men attempted to abduct the daughter and grandson of Pierre Noizat, CEO of Paymium. The attempt was thwarted by Noizat’s daughter and bystanders.
  • Earlier May Kidnapping: The father of a crypto marketing entrepreneur was kidnapped and held for a ransom between €5 million and €7 million. Authorities rescued him.

While arrests haven't been made in the Noizat family incident, six individuals connected to the crypto entrepreneur’s father's kidnapping are in custody. These incidents follow the earlier kidnapping of Ledger co-founder David Balland.

Increased Security Measures

In response, French Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau has increased security measures for crypto entrepreneurs and their families. Industry executives are also taking proactive steps, including hiring professional bodyguards. A GitHub page compiled by Jameson Lopp details six crypto-ransom related incidents in France this year, half occurring in Paris.
