Ethereum Transaction Fee Revenue Plunges 95%

Ethereum (ETH), the world's second-largest blockchain, experienced a dramatic 95% drop in quarterly transaction fee revenue from its all-time high in Q4 2021. This significant decline, as highlighted by Token Terminal, points to a major shift in the Ethereum ecosystem.

Factors Driving the Fee Revenue Drop

  • Layer 2 Adoption: The increasing popularity of Layer 2 scaling solutions significantly reduced transaction fees on the Ethereum mainnet. EIP-4844 further decreased data costs, impacting revenue from Layer 2 activity.
  • NFT Market Downturn: The decline in Non-Fungible Token (NFT) market activity significantly reduced transaction volume and, consequently, fee revenue. The peak of the NFT boom in Q4 2021 contrasts sharply with current market conditions.

Token Terminal projects Ethereum's Q1 2025 transaction fee revenue at approximately $217 million, a stark contrast to the $4.3 billion peak in Q4 2021. This represents a 95% decrease.

The impact extends beyond transaction fees; Ethereum's price has also seen a substantial drop, trading 58.8% below its all-time high. Monthly revenue also took a sharp downturn in 2025, with January recording $150.8 million and February only $47.5 million.

A CoinShares report emphasizes the role of EIP-4844 in reducing Layer 2 fees. While making transactions cheaper, it also lowered the revenue generated from this activity. The report states: "Layer 2-related fees, which were high in 2023 and early 2024, have since declined due to cost savings introduced by EIP-4844."

Worst Quarterly Decline Since 2018

An analyst on X noted that ETH experienced its sharpest quarterly decline in Q1, dropping by -40%—its biggest quarterly loss since 2018. This highlights the broader market challenges facing Ethereum.
