Ethereum Foundation Restructures Leadership

The Ethereum Foundation, supporting Ethereum blockchain development, has announced a significant leadership restructuring. This reorganization separates the management team's responsibilities from those of the board of directors, aiming to improve efficiency and strategic focus.

The board will function as a "security council," safeguarding the foundation's core principles and defining Ethereum's future vision. Meanwhile, the management team will concentrate on the strategic and operational implementation of these visions. This new structure was announced in an April 28 blog post and subsequent X posts.

Hsiao-Wei Wang and Tomasz K. Stańczak were appointed as co-executive directors on March 2, their roles officially commencing April 28. Their two-year term prioritizes addressing critical Ethereum challenges. Stańczak's role will be balanced with his work as founder of Nethermind, an Ethereum infrastructure firm, and a soon-to-be-announced Ethereum-focused venture capital firm.

The management team also includes Bastian Aue (organizational strategy, hiring, and training) and Josh Stark (project execution, communications, and marketing).

The board comprises Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin, Ethereum Foundation President Aya Miyaguchi, Swiss counsel Patrick Storchenegger, and Wang (bridging board and management). Buterin will continue providing technical and intellectual guidance, Miyaguchi will oversee the foundation's vision and external relations, and Storchenegger will manage legal and compliance.

The board selected Wang and Stańczak as executive directors—a decision they acknowledge as unconventional—and retains the authority to terminate their positions.

Increased Foundation Involvement

The Ethereum Foundation's heightened activity in the ecosystem follows past criticism regarding its engagement with decentralized finance (DeFi) innovation. Some attributed the foundation's perceived lack of involvement to ETH's price performance relative to Bitcoin (BTC) and Solana (SOL).

Scaling Ethereum: Key Focus

The Foundation's main priorities for the next year are: scaling Ethereum's Layer 1, scaling blobs at Layer 2, and enhancing user experience. Proposals like EIPs-9678 and 9698, focusing on increasing the gas limit to potentially boost transaction throughput, are already underway, spearheaded by researchers like Dankrad Feist and Sophia Gold.
