Crypto Market Movers: Altman Ousted, Argentina's Election, and CoinDesk's Sale

Crypto Market News

Crypto Market Summary: November 20, 2023

Bitcoin experienced a significant jump, briefly exceeding $37,500, before settling around $37,128 (up 1.8% in 24 hours). Ether also saw gains, trading at $2,019 (up 3.4%). Other notable movers included Synthetix (+15%), NEAR (+15%), Lido DAO (+10%), and Hedera (+8%). Worldcoin (WLD), however, saw volatility following the unexpected dismissal of Sam Altman from OpenAI.

Sam Altman's Departure and Worldcoin's Volatility

The removal of Sam Altman as CEO of OpenAI sent ripples through the crypto market, causing Worldcoin to initially drop 25%. Subsequent reports of Altman's potential return and later his move to Microsoft to develop a ChatGPT competitor further fueled price fluctuations. At the time of writing, WLD is down 2.6% over the past 24 hours.

Argentina's Election and Bitcoin's Rise

The surprising victory of libertarian candidate Javier Milei in Argentina's presidential election led to a near 3% increase in Bitcoin's price. Milei's radical economic policies, including plans to replace the Argentinian peso with the US dollar and dissolve the central bank, highlight the potential for investors to seek refuge in alternative assets during times of economic uncertainty. Bitcoin's performance in Argentina over the past year (almost 400% in peso terms) underscores this trend.

CoinDesk Acquired by Bullish

Cryptocurrency exchange Bullish has completed its acquisition of CoinDesk, marking a significant development in the media landscape. Bullish plans to invest in CoinDesk's growth, potentially expanding the Consensus conference to Asia. CoinDesk will operate as an independent subsidiary, maintaining editorial independence under the leadership of former Wall Street Journal editor-in-chief Matt Murray.

Ether ETF Filings Surge

Fidelity's recent filing for a spot ether ETF adds to the growing number of applications, now totaling seven including Grayscale's conversion proposal. This heightened interest in ether ETFs reflects the increasing institutional adoption of crypto assets.
