Crypto Lawyer Eyes NY AG Race, Pushing 'Lawfare' Concerns
Crypto Lawyer Signals Challenge To NY AG With Lawfare Message
Khurram Dara, previously policy counsel at Coinbase, is contemplating a run for New York State Attorney General in 2026, potentially challenging incumbent Letitia James.
Dara told Cointelegraph that while a decision hasn't been made, digital assets could feature prominently in his campaign. He has already voiced support for Tornado Cash co-founder Roman Storm and criticized figures like Senator Elizabeth Warren on social media.
"My platform would be focused on ending lawfare across the board, which certainly includes crypto," Dara stated. He argues that some state AGs are overstepping by attempting to fill perceived gaps in federal policy, effectively acting as national regulators.
James, who assumed office in 2019, has initiated numerous legal actions against crypto entities like Genesis, Alex Mashinsky (former Celsius CEO), NovaTech, and KuCoin.
New York is a significant hub for the crypto industry, housing headquarters for Gemini, Galaxy Digital, and Chainalysis, making the AG position crucial for digital asset regulation and enforcement.
James has previously stated, "We are seeing the real dangers of unregulated cryptocurrency platforms with schemes like these. New Yorkers can rest assured that we will use the tools at our disposal to crack down on crypto fraudsters.”
Dara's Political Background
Dara, 36, currently works at the Council on Foreign Relations and has never held elected office. His past experience includes internships with the New York State Senate, the US House of Representatives, and the US Attorney’s Office.
A Republican Challenger?
If Dara runs as a Republican, he would follow in the footsteps of other lawyers who have challenged Democrat incumbents on crypto-related issues. For example:
- John Deaton, an advocate for XRP tokenholders, ran against Elizabeth Warren in Massachusetts in 2024.
"New York is where many people in crypto, tech and venture want to be... I think the state should embrace that, rather than try to run from it,” said Dara. He added that the crypto community seeks fair treatment and regulation, not special favors.
A Siena College poll from December 2024 showed James with a 40% favorable rating among New Yorkers. Michael Henry, who lost to James in 2022, is the only other announced candidate for New York AG in 2026.
