Canary Capital Files for TRON ETF
Canary Capital Seeks SEC Approval for TRON Spot ETF
Canary Capital has filed a Form S-1 with the SEC, proposing the first-ever spot exchange-traded fund (ETF) focused on TRON (TRX). This unique ETF aims to provide investors with exposure to TRX's price performance and staking rewards, a key differentiator from previous proposals.
A Test for SEC Stance on Staking
The filing designates BitGo Trust Company as custodian and Canary Capital as the fund's sponsor. This proposal directly challenges the SEC's stance on staking in crypto investment products. The SEC has previously flagged staking services as potentially unregistered securities.
TRON founder Justin Sun voiced his support, urging US investors to act quickly. He highlighted TRX's potential for growth and predicted increased institutional interest following approval.
“US VCs should start buying TRX — and fast. Don’t wait until it’s too late. TRX is a price that only moves one way: up,” Sun stated on X.
Key TRON Metrics:
- Currently the ninth-largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization (~$22.94 billion).
- Second only to Ethereum in stablecoin settlement volume, particularly for Tether (USDT).
- Known for fast and low-cost transaction processing.

Regulatory Hurdles and Future Outlook
Despite the market excitement, the proposal faces significant regulatory uncertainty. Past Ethereum ETF filings were forced to exclude staking due to SEC concerns. While firms like Grayscale are pushing for altcoin ETFs with staking, the SEC's scrutiny remains a considerable challenge.
The SEC's past actions, including investigations involving Justin Sun, add another layer of complexity. Allegations of TRON’s use in illicit activities, which the network denies, also cast a shadow.
If approved, Canary Capital's TRX ETF would be a landmark achievement. It could attract a wide range of investors seeking both price appreciation and staking yield.
