Bitcoin Mining Costs Surge 9%
Bitcoin Mining Costs Surge 9% by Q2 2025
The cost of mining a single Bitcoin has significantly increased, reaching a median of over $70,000 in the second quarter of 2025. This 9% rise follows a previous increase from $52,000 in Q4 2024 to $64,000 in Q1 2025, according to Bitcoin mining research firm TheMinerMag. The rise is attributed to a combination of increasing network hashrate and energy prices.
Impact on Miners
This substantial increase in production costs puts pressure on less efficient Bitcoin miners, potentially shrinking their profit margins. While Bitcoin's price currently sits around $107,635, providing a buffer for many, the rising costs are a significant factor. These estimates don't fully account for the depreciation of mining rigs or revenue from renting out mining machines.
Cost-Cutting Measures
Public mining companies are prioritizing efficiency, especially regarding fleet hashcost—the cost of computing power for Bitcoin mining. While the median fleet hashcost remained steady at approximately $34 per petahash per second (PH/s) in Q1 2025, some firms like Terawulf and Bitdeer experienced over 25% increases, largely due to soaring energy costs (reaching $0.081 per kilowatt-hour (kWh) in Q1 2025, almost double the $0.041/kWh in Q1 2024).
Diversification in Mining Stocks
The Bitcoin mining stock market shows a divergence, with investors favoring companies that diversify revenue streams beyond Bitcoin mining. While Bitcoin saw a 1.35% increase between May 4 and June 13, some companies like IREN experienced a remarkable 21.4% surge. Others, such as Core Scientific (CORZ), Bit Digital (BTBT), and Cipher Mining (CIFR), also saw double-digit gains. Conversely, Canaan (CAN) and Bitfarms (BITF) underperformed, each falling by over 21%.
This trend highlights the growing investor focus on revenue diversification. Many Bitcoin miners are venturing into areas like AI hosting and high-performance computing services to mitigate the risks associated with solely relying on Bitcoin mining revenue.
