Bitcoin Liquidity: A Short-Term Risk Asset?

Bitcoin's Liquidity and Short-Term Price Volatility

Recent Bitcoin price swings are primarily driven by its exceptional liquidity and constant trading availability, not necessarily a correlation with other risk assets, according to Michael Saylor, co-founder of MicroStrategy. This assertion was made in response to Dave Portnoy's observation on X (formerly Twitter) about Bitcoin's apparent mirroring of US stock market trends.

Saylor's Perspective on Bitcoin's Trading Patterns

Saylor clarified on X that Bitcoin's short-term behavior as a risk asset stems from its status as the most liquid, readily saleable, and continuously accessible asset globally. During market panic, traders prioritize selling whatever they can liquidate quickly, regardless of long-term investment strategies. This doesn't imply inherent long-term correlation with other assets, but rather highlights Bitcoin's immediate tradability.

He further emphasized that Bitcoin's very usefulness contributes to its volatility.

Recent Bitcoin Price Movements

As an example, Bitcoin peaked at $87,800 on April 3rd before dropping to $81,500 following a tariff announcement. At the time of writing, BTC trades around $82,700, representing approximately a 5% decrease in the last 24 hours (data from TradingView).

MicroStrategy's Bitcoin Holdings

Despite market fluctuations, MicroStrategy's 528,185 Bitcoin holdings still yield substantial unrealized profits (over $8 billion). MicroStrategy, under Saylor's leadership, has no intention of selling its Bitcoin and aims to raise $42 billion over three years to continue acquiring more Bitcoin, ultimately envisioning itself as a significant Bitcoin bank.

GameStop's Bitcoin Strategy

Saylor's influence extends beyond MicroStrategy. GameStop, after updating its investment policy to permit Bitcoin as a treasury asset, is allocating a portion of its recently raised $1.5 billion in capital to Bitcoin purchases. Saylor even encouraged GameStop CEO Ryan Cohen to buy Bitcoin while he perceived it to be ‘on sale.’
