Coinbase Launches First 24/7 Bitcoin and Ethereum Futures in the US

Coinbase Derivatives is set to launch 24/7 Bitcoin and Ethereum futures trading in the US. This is a significant development, marking the first time American traders will have continuous access to regulated crypto futures contracts.

Key Takeaways

  • Coinbase Derivatives will provide 24/7 access to Bitcoin and Ethereum futures trading.
  • US traders gain round-the-clock access to regulated crypto futures.

This launch aims to bridge the gap between US trading hours and the global crypto market, where over 75% of trading volume occurs outside of traditional US market hours, primarily on international exchanges. This move offers a significant advantage to US-based traders.

The offering includes both nano and large-sized contracts, leveraging institutional-grade infrastructure through a partnership with Nodal Clear for CFTC-regulated clearing. Coinbase Financial Markets will provide market access.

Coinbase is also developing a perpetual-style futures contract with long-dated expirations. This is designed to align with global markets while remaining compliant with US regulations, enabling traders to hold positions without contract expiration dates.

“Our goal is simple: give traders the tools they need to manage risk and seize opportunities in crypto–on their terms,” Coinbase stated.

Coinbase is collaborating with the CFTC, partners, and market participants to finalize the perpetual-style futures product design and ensure regulatory compliance. The launch is expected in the coming weeks.
